One Room Challenge

One Room Challenge | Week 6

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK SIX
The Grand Finale
Hello my fellow One Room Challenge lovers! Can you believe it? The final reveal is here. Wow, what a fun ride that was! Thanks for following along on my little bathroom rehab, I’ve been loving all of your comments and advice. And there’s nothing like the One Room Challenge to light a fire under your bum to get things done. I’m soooo happy with the way my master bathroom turned out. It was such a lost little room there for a bit. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but now it’s so “me” I can’t even describe how much I adore it. I’d have to say I’m pretty proud of my little rental makeover, especially the price!
I created a gallery wall with all of the Minted prints as well as my jewelry board and some vintage pieces.
Added some new caulk around the toilet. It really, really needed it. Also I kept the vintage rug because the other option isn’t available yet (have to wait until the 11th)!
This shot of Arden and Conrad has center stage. Love it.
The new toothbrushes and the Mr’s shaving gear. He has a great collection of shaving brushes. The two on the left are actually from his Grandfather.
Another shot of the gallery wall – as you can see it spans the whole wall.
And because it’s fun, here are some befores!

One Room Challenge | Week 5

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK five
All About the Art
Major crunch time this week. Major. Week 5?! One week to go? Ahhhh. Okay, so maybe it looks like I’m pretty good to go, BUT curveball. We’re on vacation next week. The planning on that kinda sucked didn’t it? Whoops 😉 Anyways, that basically means I need to up and have this room ready for y’all like now.
This week I started tackling the art work! Big step for me, the perpetual procrastinating art-hanger-uper 🙂 Minted is one of the One Room Challenge sponsors this time around and thanks to them I’m going to be able to create a pretty dramatic gallery wall. I’m pretty excited about it, not sure what I would have been able to come up with otherwise!
When it comes to gallery walls, there are two looks I’m drawn to: the first is where all the frames are the same size and color and the arrangement is perfectly linear and symmetrical. And the other? When it’s built up over time using very special pieces, with no two frames alike. With all of Minted’s different print framing options I figured I could “fake” the second look. So when the artwork arrived, I decided to customize a few of the frames to make them even more unique.
It was pretty easy to do, you just need some spray paint and a bit of painter’s tape and voila!

Here are all of the pieces I chose from Minted. Now keep in mind, my bathroom is teeny-tiny, so most of these are 5″x7″s.
one | two | three | four | five | six | seven | eight | nine
And now for my little collection that I teased you about last week. I’ve been collecting these pennies for years. Every time I travel and I see a penny souvenir machine I. must. stop. and get one. It’s funny I guess I only have sixteen, lol. I always thought I had more. Let me tell you though, not too long ago it was pretty difficult finding these things. I feel like in the last few years they’ve been popping back up again. Yay! My favorite? A pressed one cent euro coin at the Colosseum in Rome. I seriously couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it! Right?! I had no idea Europe had penny souvenirs too! Opens up a whole new world 😉
I used this frame and just hot glued them to the backing. Very easy.
Oh and here’s a little update on the hook situation! Different font! Love it so much more. What do you guys think? I took Michele from My Notting Hill‘s advice and used a “beefier” font. Amazing difference. Thanks Michele!
Tune in next week to see all of these lovelies on the wall, mmmkay? Here’s the weekly breakdown:

One Room Challenge | Week 4

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK four
All the Pretty Antlers
Okay a little bit of progress this week. I didn’t quite get everything done that I would have liked. I actually almost didn’t have a post for you this morning. How is it Wednesday already?! Anyhow…let’s start the tour, shall we?
Yay for hand towels! Believe it or not, we had no hand towel holder in here. I had all the towel bars removed when I first painted the walls from that lavender-blue color. Eek.

With the new mirror in place, there wasn’t much room. Fortunately this fun towel ring from Urban Outfitters fit the bill perfectly. It’s more petite than you realize from the pictures online, which worked out just fine for me.

Next up? I hung these lovely set of antlers courtesy of Wayfair. I heart them. These are one of my top three favorite things in the room. And a pretty reasonable price if you’re buying them. So adorable. BTW they’re made of resin, so no animals were hurt for the sake of my bathroom 😉

Now…for my aforementioned addition to the towel hooks: these vintage-looking “His and Hers” labels. I originally spotted them on Jennifer’s bathroom makeover and just had to have them. Unfortunately, I don’t think they work here. The reason? They are pretty much the same width as the bow hooks. I think they need to be wider. Sigh. What do you guys think? Yay or nay?

This week was a great mail week. Some fun new accessories arrived! New wooden toothbrushes, a fab new soap dish and BLACK soap from France. Why hello there, you pretty thing, you! The scent is so strong and pure, like only French soap has. And speaking of French scents. The celebrity of candles, a black Baies. Big splurge here, but luckily I was able to use a gift card that we had lying around and almost forgot about. Pretty excited that I didn’t have to slap down any dolla-dolla bills.

This pretty little gem of a terrarium arrived as well. I love the sculptural element it adds.
An update on the rug front. So far the vote is overwhelmingly in favor of the vintage rug. This makes me secretly happy. I really hope it works. I think it will. Oh and I tried negotiating for this rug, per Christine’s suggestion, but the seller wasn’t having it.

I also spotted this guy the other day. I definitely think it could be a contender. I like it better than the Ikea one from last week. Thoughts? Hmmm, I still might like my vintage rug better…
Next week? I need to stop procrastinating and start on the gallery wall. Oh and I have a little project I’ve been working on. I’m creating a display for a collection I have been working on for more than ten years. Way to leave you with a cliffhanger right? 😉

Weekly Expenses:
hex towel ring (sold out) | $14
set of 3 antlers (c/o wayfair) | $0
vintage label holders (2) | $5.60
black baies candle (used a gift card) | $0
toothbrushes | $12
soap dish | $18
Black soap | $6
terrarium (used friends & family discount) | $17.40
TOTAL | $73

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK three
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…
It’s so exciting to see this bad boy on the wall! Finally. I’ve been lusting after this mirror for a long, long time. And I’m very happy with it in here. What do you guys think? And I was able to get it using a friend’s and family discount. Score.
We also switched out the toilet seat to one in black. I love the vintage vibe it gives. Now if only I could throw in some penny tile and marble. (Speaking of marble did you see the gorgeous slab that Abby has picked out for her bathroom? So gorgeous.) Anyhow, back to my bathroom…Here’s the new black seat. Ignore the gross calk line. It’s on my to-do list :
The new towels are here too! I bought Turkish foutas with black and white stripes (of course!). And some new hand towels with even bigger stripes. We have the same hand towels in the front bathroom, but in yellow, and I just love them. I decided not to get them digitally printed this time, since I didn’t think it would stand out that much on the slate stripe. These cute little black trimmed washcloths are a copycat of the Gotham towel line which I adore. The black trim totally makes it, AND I bought two washcloths on sale for only $3 each.
Also another fun change was updating the towel hooks. I thought these adorable little bow hooks added a little bit of whimsy, instead of the classic brass robe hooks we had before. I also have a little more planned for these hooks, so stay tuned.
Now we come to my dilemma of the day. You all have seen the vintage rug I’ve been using as a bath mat. I actually love it! But I wasn’t sure if it would work since it’s kind of a bluish-gray. So I ordered this black zig zag mat thinking it might mesh better. Right now I’m not loving either of them. It’s hard to decide because I plan to hang a bunch of things on the walls. I think I’ll wait to decide which one I like the most after the art is up. Or maybe I should go in another direction all together?
Here’s my dream rug. It was listed on Etsy for $345 (ouch!), but it looks like that seller closed their account, so now all I have left is this picture of it. Sad. It probably would have been too much for the space anyways…right? right? Moving on.
I think this rug would look amazing, but at $85, it’s still out of the price range unfortunately.
And same with this one at $140.
This one might work and the price is right.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions for me?
Here’s the breakdown of this week’s damage:

mirror* | $179.40
toilet seat** | $76
towels (2) | $50

hand towels (2) | $20
washcloths (2) | $6
hooks | $6

One Room Challenge | Week 2

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK two
Paint it Black (and Gold)

Okay this week was where I got all of my bases covered. I repainted the vanity…black. Oh I thought about painting the walls black, like so many of you mentioned in the comments. A black bath is so dramatic. BUT in this particular bath I didn’t have the chops. First of all it’s already so dark in here and second? I don’t feel like getting ready in a cave. It’s one thing if it’s a guest bath or a half bath, etc. But this is where biz gets done in the morning. All black in here would just not have worked. Sooo, I did the next best thing: white walls and black cabinetry, paired with our lovely and original cultured marble countertops and sink 😉

I went with Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black in Semi Gloss, a true black, in their Emerald line. Very happy with the way it turned out. Huge thanks to Sherwin Williams for being one of the One Room Challenge’s lovely sponsors and giving me the paint to get this done.

a progress shot

the money shot

Next we tackled a bunch of little details, which, in the end add up to some major change:

We updated the outlet and switch plates with still had their original facings from 1962. And actually we used some outlet faces that we found in a box in the garage, so they were FREE! Just waiting for someone to install them, brilliant.

I updated this soap dispenser from having a polished nickel finish (along with some tarnishing), to a smooth brushed brass/gold. It looks so nice and clean again. I used my go-to gold spray paint that I already had a stash of in the garage. Easy update.

We also spray painted the toilet paper dispenser to match.

And I also did the cabinetry pulls. Even though they had a brass finish already, the bright sheen of the polished knobs didn’t quite vibe with my plan.

Oh and one more thing? I updated the brass pulls on the vanity. Yep, the old ones were brass too, but they just were never quite right to me. I’m MUCH happier with the new ones. I also moved the position of the handles a bit higher on the drawer fronts. Voila!

before

after

What do you think? A good move, right? I definitely think so. Much more sleek and understated AND modern.

So my expenditure for this week? Not too bad!

paint c/o sherwin williams | $0
New cabinet pulls | $13.50
new faceplates for outlets | $0
gold spray paint | $0

Next week? I’ll be hanging the new mirror that I just received a few days ago. EXCITED! I’ve been drooling over that mirror for awhile. In fact I based my old, old blog header off of it. Pretty funny, huh? Kind of a full circle 😉

The Master Bathroom
So here we are, at the starting line. I finally let the cat out of the bag: My ORC is my master bathroom. Ahh the ole’ master bath. I never really had a vision for this space. I started decorating it as an after-thought and that’s why it always kind of looked like one. Here’s where she is now:

This is what it looks like everyday; definitely not the eye sore we started with when we moved in a little over a year ago (see pic below), but she’s no beauty queen either.
bathroom when we moved in
Since then, we’ve given her an all-over paint job and some new jewelry (aka hardware) all on a tight budget. BUT we definitely have a ways to go. Of course I’d love to gut the space and start over, but we’re renters, so we can’t spend a ton of money. I have never taken the time to actually decide what I wanted this space to look like, so as of now that’s going to change. The only real knock-outs right now are the Jonathan Adler light fixture from Lamps Plus and the vintage rug.
Shall we check out the inspiration I’m using for master bath 2.0?

Here’s my updated design board.

The color theme will be black and white (what else?) with brass. I love a touch of vintage which helps add uniqueness to any space. And don’t forget a graphic and contrasty pattern to make a statement. I’ll also be adding in a gallery wall; a makeover wouldn’t be a makeover without a gallery wall, now would it? I seriously can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Now go check out all the other One Room Challenge talents and see what they’re up to. It definitely makes for some good hump day reading, don’t you think?

One Room Challenge | Introduction

Guess what? The next One Room Challenge is coming up and who’s going to be a part of it? That’s right, this girl right here. If you haven’t heard of the ORC before, you’re missing out. Linda from Calling It Home created the One Room Challenge a couple of years ago and I always make sure to follow along. Twenty bloggers have signed up to completely makeover one room over a six week period and we’ll be posting our progress on a weekly basis.

The fun commences next week, so stay tuned. I’ll be working on a room that I’ve shown you before, but has never felt right to me. Sorry to leave you hanging, but you’ll see which room it is next week!

In the meantime feel free to check out all of the other One Room Challenge participants:
