One Room Challenge | Week 3

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK three
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…
It’s so exciting to see this bad boy on the wall! Finally. I’ve been lusting after this mirror for a long, long time. And I’m very happy with it in here. What do you guys think? And I was able to get it using a friend’s and family discount. Score.
We also switched out the toilet seat to one in black. I love the vintage vibe it gives. Now if only I could throw in some penny tile and marble. (Speaking of marble did you see the gorgeous slab that Abby has picked out for her bathroom? So gorgeous.) Anyhow, back to my bathroom…Here’s the new black seat. Ignore the gross calk line. It’s on my to-do list :
The new towels are here too! I bought Turkish foutas with black and white stripes (of course!). And some new hand towels with even bigger stripes. We have the same hand towels in the front bathroom, but in yellow, and I just love them. I decided not to get them digitally printed this time, since I didn’t think it would stand out that much on the slate stripe. These cute little black trimmed washcloths are a copycat of the Gotham towel line which I adore. The black trim totally makes it, AND I bought two washcloths on sale for only $3 each.
Also another fun change was updating the towel hooks. I thought these adorable little bow hooks added a little bit of whimsy, instead of the classic brass robe hooks we had before. I also have a little more planned for these hooks, so stay tuned.
Now we come to my dilemma of the day. You all have seen the vintage rug I’ve been using as a bath mat. I actually love it! But I wasn’t sure if it would work since it’s kind of a bluish-gray. So I ordered this black zig zag mat thinking it might mesh better. Right now I’m not loving either of them. It’s hard to decide because I plan to hang a bunch of things on the walls. I think I’ll wait to decide which one I like the most after the art is up. Or maybe I should go in another direction all together?
Here’s my dream rug. It was listed on Etsy for $345 (ouch!), but it looks like that seller closed their account, so now all I have left is this picture of it. Sad. It probably would have been too much for the space anyways…right? right? Moving on.
I think this rug would look amazing, but at $85, it’s still out of the price range unfortunately.
And same with this one at $140.
This one might work and the price is right.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions for me?
Here’s the breakdown of this week’s damage:

mirror* | $179.40
toilet seat** | $76
towels (2) | $50

hand towels (2) | $20
washcloths (2) | $6
hooks | $6
bathmat* | $29.40
total | $291

*used friends & family discount

I love that you did a black toilet seat- amazing! And those bow hooks are the best, best! As for rugs, I love the tribal one best- any chance you could bargain price down?

I had to focus, my eyes keep drifting back to the gold hardware – so pretty against the black! My favorite rugs, are the prints, your vintage, etsy or tribal. Good luck!

Thanks Pam! I know what you mean, the gold/black combo is definitely eye arresting πŸ˜‰

Ha! The progress was a tough one this week. Racing to get things done! Ahh! I'm definitely leaning towards vintage too. Plus it's unbelievably soft!

For what it's worth, I like your "old" (bluish gray) rug better than any of the other choices. I think it's the prettiest, but it also looks more substantial than some of the others.

I cannot get over what a difference that black toilet seat makes!

i agree, the vintage rug looks best for now because its such a good contrast to everything else. XO

How cute is your toilet seat (can't believe I just said that, lol) And those towels are amazing! I feel like the zig zag rug competes with your chevron mirror. Such a shame your dream rug is gone. I know you're going to find something amazing, you always do!

  16. Christy K says

    April 16, 2014 at 6:19 pm

Okay – I am laughing at how much we all love that black toilet seat, but truly it is awesome. Makes the room all come together. So funny! I vote for the vintage one you have been using. The pattern is different, but the colors work. I think the new rug is too much like the mirror pattern and makes your eye jump back and forth. The vintage rug is more subtle, so the mirror stands out – and it is gorgeous. I love those towels from West Elm. One of my favorite stores of all time!

    • Reichel Broussard says

      April 16, 2014 at 11:14 pm

Me too! Who knew a little black could elevate a toilet so much?! Yep, I totally agree about the patterns being too similar with the rug & mirror.

  17. Elizabeth @ The Little Black Door says

Love the black toilet seat. Who knew a loo cover could be so chic?! I prefer the vintage rug you already have – but I'm with Tobe – I am biased and tend to prefer those because of the personality they add to any space.

    • Reichel Broussard says

      April 16, 2014 at 11:17 pm

Yep, I'm in the same camp. Will probably stick with the vintage rug πŸ™‚ Thanks lady!

  20. Moira says

    April 16, 2014 at 11:29 pm

It's coming along nicely, Reichel. It makes me laugh how much you're like me in your resistance to hang things up, it is always the last thing that I do, usually when I am staging my home to sell…I can never make a decision when I comes to wall art and bathrooms are especially difficult. I love the black toilet seat, it's a nice change (thank you, Lowes!). I think that your vintage rug is the best of the choices and the style and size fit the room best IMO. I love following your progress. Once again, you're doing great work.

    • Reichel Broussard says

      April 16, 2014 at 11:49 pm

  21. Abby M. Interiors says

    April 16, 2014 at 11:41 pm

Trending: #blacktoiletseat. :-). It's not that it's a toilet seat, it's that most wouldn't even think of this as an option, and that's what sets you apart. Rockstar! I love the whole room. The mirror and rug you have are gorgeous, but those bow hooks have me over the moon! I wish we could share bathrooms. Lol. And ohmygosh Thank You for the shout out!! xx

I agree with a lot of the previous posters, and like the original vintage rug best. I think the darkness and weight of it anchors everything nicely! I do however have that IKEA rug and I love it. My three year found it…I never would have got it had he not picked it up and said he wanted it, hahaha. Anyway, it's in our kitchen so I say get it anyway for $20! I promise you'll find a use for it somewhere.

Like everyone else, love the toilet seat. Your new mirror is fabulous. For some reason, I keep 'seeing' a black 'box' painted on the wall so the mirror would be framed in a black border? Just sayin'… This little bathroom is moving right along. I like the vintage rug best, too.

    • Reichel Broussard says

      April 17, 2014 at 7:06 am

Thanks Linda! Hmm, interesting suggestion. There's going to be quite a few things up on the walls soon though, so it might be a little busy. Stay tuned. πŸ™‚

I love the mirror. But maybe it's just the photography but the mirror looks too small for the scale of the room. And the color takes away from the richness of the brass and cabinet.

    • Reichel Broussard says

Odd suggestion but have you tried looking for a Navajo horse saddle pad/blanket. They used to be all the rage in the 90s for the H/J riders and you can still find them around. They are quite inexpensive in would look like the second and third options.
