I can’t believe that I’m doing this you guys…but yes, the first home tour of our new house that I’m posting is a No Makeup Home Tour. No staged, professionally photographed glamour shots in this post. But I guess it makes for good “before” pictures, right? When Kyla first invited me to take part, I had no idea we’d be moving a few weeks later!
I should probably back up and tell you our house buying story. We had been watching the housing market in our current neighborhood ever since we moved to Oakland a little over 2 years ago. Not many houses come up for sale in this particular area, so when they do come on the market, competition is fierce. My husband and I had resigned ourselves to renting, but we habitually checked Redfin for homes listed for sale. When a home popped up on Redfin…in our neighborhood and within our price range, we jumped on it. The house was smaller than we originally wanted, but super cute nonetheless! Lucky for us, there was only one other offer, which almost never happens here! We raised our offer a little bit, but won out in the end! Next thing we know….it was moving day. Life has been a complete whirlwind since!
Since we downsized, we had to purge like CRAZY. Konmari to the rescue. I’ll be writing another blog post about all of my moving, purging tips next! And now that we’re in, I feel like I’m in a period of “decorator’s block” until we can get things organized and put away. I’m of the mindset, that you have to live in a new home for a bit, to see how it works for you, before you can start decorating it. So…needless to say, things are slow-going. I don’t really want to get anything new for the house until I know exactly what I need. And I won’t know what I need, until I’ve figured out where everything, we already have, is going! Talk about going in circles. 😜
The No Makeup Home Tour just seemed like the perfect opportunity to put it all out there, to keep myself accountable. So even though the house is nowhere even close to looking how I want it, I’m sharing it with you. So without further ado, let’s move onto the tour shall we?
The living room is one room you have seen, so let’s take a look at what real life looks like in here:
Boxes and mail and all sorts of goodies pile up here! I just got a big shipment in from Target and it’s exploded in my living room. Let’s not mention all of the artwork stacked everywhere :X This room has become sort of a catch all for items with no home. Soon, soon!
Next up is the family room:
This room is organized because we use it the most (and because I make the kids clean up after themselves), so not too terrible. I still need to go through the shelves and figure out what toys stay here and which ones need to go up to their rooms and vice versa. Also, we need to get rid of one of our Oeuf shelves. I hate to do it, but it’s just too much Oeuf on one wall 😉 And of course that light fixture is threatening to behead some unlucky passerby.
Now entering the kitchen, some of you already weighed in on what I should do in here on my instagram stories awhile back:
Not awful, but not great either. I’m still having issues figuring out where to put things in there. Such a puzzle. And I have some great ideas on how to spruce it up, post on that coming soon!
Let’s take a peek at the dining area:
Yep, haven’t really touched it, yet. The dining table we got not too long ago is just a tad too big here. So that needs to go. The lighting is meh, there are vases and curtains resting on the built-in bench and yeah, those are paint brushes on the table. Ha.
Okay let’s take a look at the master bedroom:
We still have our cal king bed and as you can see it’s a tiny room. I just couldn’t give up my mattress though! So instead I gave up my nightstand! lol. One of these days we’ll get a smaller bed, but for right now, I’m ok with it. Oh and did you see the dresser? It’s basically a catch all for decor that I haven’t decided what to do with yet. Good times. Oh but priorities: the Samsung TV has been hung!
Let’s look at my office now…
It’s the end of the school year right now, so crap is everywhere. I’m getting ready for a bunch of end-of-the year parties and gifts, etc for school. I help out a lot at the kid’s school. Oh and let’s not forget a girl scout troop leader too. Can’t wait to clear all of this stuff out! And yes, the light fixture is atrocious. It will be going soon. I also need some window treatments since the sun beats in during the day and I feel like I need sunglass to work at my computer! 😎
Now on to the upstairs:
The upstairs is all for the kids, we only venture up there on an as needed basis. So as you can see, they’ve done their own kind of decorating. Note to self: go upstairs once a day to make sure they aren’t tearing down the sheetrock.
Aaaaand that concludes our tour for today. Lots of progress to be made, right? That’s a whole lotta #reallife going on right there guys. But I kind of love being able to keep it real with you, because let’s be honest, who knows when I would have gotten around to posting a more finished tour! I feel like this will help keep me on my game now!
Now that you’ve seen mine, I know you’re hungry for more! And we hate to disappoint, so go take a look at some more real life action from these talented peeps:

OMG! I totally didn’t even think about the fact that you bought a house during all this! AHHHHH! I love it all and I can’t believe you ditched your nightstand for the cal king…brilliant! Thank you soooooo much for sharing your IRL home lady!
Reichel says
Hahahaha – I know, I did have some panic moments and *almost* backed out because the house is seriously ridiculous right now, but meh…it’s real life so. There it is 😉 So glad to be a part of it Kyla. Such a fun idea! xo

Hey Reichel,
It seems like you have a lot of work to do. But still, I like that nightstand and the lights above your desk.
Reichel says
Thanks so much!

Karen Bertelsen says
Why don’t I ever get invited to do these fun things?! Being a Canadian blogger is such a lonely thing sometimes. I guarantee this is one decorating challenge I could have ROCKED. 😉 At least one room in my house has a power tool and sawdust in it at any given time. If not, there’s cat barf. ~ karen
Emily@boxwoodclippings.com says
It is so cute, and it will be even more fabulous once you put your stamp on it. Love those curved ceilings in the master bedroom!
Reichel says
Thanks so much Emily! We’re slowly getting to the point where I can see the spaces instead of the clutter 😜 lol
Jo Ann says
I love it! I am redoing my home office so I cleaned out the closet and my desk. Who new i had so much stuff in those 2 places? I have boxes in almost every room in my house until I figure out where to put everything. I’m glad I am not alone! Thanks for sharing.
Reichel says
Isn’t it amazing how much stuff can accumulate? It’s shocking really LOL Still trying to figure out what to do with all of our stuff. Might have to do another round of konmari 😉
Jessica says
Thank you for sharing your mess!! It is refreshing to see that I’m not the only one with some skeletons in the closet. I love your style and even your clutter is pretty.
Reichel says
Ha! Thank you 🙂 It’s a total disaster right now, but appreciate the compliment! xo
Kendra says
In your ‘catch-all’ room, where in the world did you get that console table? I’m absolutely in love with it!
Reichel says
It was from West Elm awhile ago and they don’t sell it anymore 🙁 It was the grasscloth covered parsons desk, maybe you can find it on Craigslist or eBay? Are you local…I might be selling it soon, but not sure yet!
Rose Rise says
I love those no make up home tours! You can really see how people live. Your home is just lovely and very stylish.
Reichel says
