One Room Challenge | Week 2

Paint it Black (and Gold)

Okay this week was where I got all of my bases covered. I repainted the vanity…black. Oh I thought about painting the walls black, like so many of you mentioned in the comments. A black bath is so dramatic. BUT in this particular bath I didn’t have the chops. First of all it’s already so dark in here and second? I don’t feel like getting ready in a cave. It’s one thing if it’s a guest bath or a half bath, etc. But this is where biz gets done in the morning. All black in here would just not have worked. Sooo, I did the next best thing: white walls and black cabinetry, paired with our lovely and original cultured marble countertops and sink πŸ˜‰

I went with Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black in Semi Gloss, a true black, in their Emerald line. Very happy with the way it turned out. Huge thanks to Sherwin Williams for being one of the One Room Challenge’s lovely sponsors and giving me the paint to get this done.

Next we tackled a bunch of little details, which, in the end add up to some major change:

We updated the outlet and switch plates with still had their original facings from 1962. And actually we used some outlet faces that we found in a box in the garage, so they were FREE! Just waiting for someone to install them, brilliant.

I updated this soap dispenser from having a polished nickel finish (along with some tarnishing), to a smooth brushed brass/gold. It looks so nice and clean again. I used my go-to gold spray paint that I already had a stash of in the garage. Easy update.

We also spray painted the toilet paper dispenser to match.

And I also did the cabinetry pulls. Even though they had a brass finish already, the bright sheen of the polished knobs didn’t quite vibe with my plan.

Oh and one more thing? I updated the brass pulls on the vanity. Yep, the old ones were brass too, but they just were never quite right to me. I’m MUCH happier with the new ones. I also moved the position of the handles a bit higher on the drawer fronts. Voila!

What do you think? A good move, right? I definitely think so. Much more sleek and understated AND modern.

So my expenditure for this week? Not too bad!

paint c/o sherwin williams | $0
New cabinet pulls | $13.50
new faceplates for outlets | $0
gold spray paint | $0

Next week? I’ll be hanging the new mirror that I just received a few days ago. EXCITED! I’ve been drooling over that mirror for awhile. In fact I based my old, old blog header off of it. Pretty funny, huh? Kind of a full circle πŸ˜‰

  1. This looks beautiful, Reichel! I love how all the seemingly small details make a big impact. xx

  2. I can't believe that I was about to ask you where you found a god toilet paper holder…BRILLIANT! This looks amazing, and I agree with you on the huge change from a small detail like the switches.

    1. I know…paint is definitely the easiest and cheapest way to make an impact! We just hung the mirror and it looks AWESOME. Can't wait to show everyone πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you! Me too, although it doesn't look like a huge difference in the pics, it really is gorgeous against the brass.

  3. Great job! I love, love, love black and brass and white. So chic! And I absolutely think you were right to not paint it black in there. In this case, function totally trumps form!

    1. Ah! Thanks for the confirmation on that. I do love a dark dramatic wall in a bath…but I just couldn't see it working in this space. Glad you agree!!! I wanted to so bad, but refrained πŸ˜‰

    1. Thank you, thank you for agreeing! It was a hard decision, but I definitely think this was the right way to go too πŸ™‚

  4. First of 13.50 is my kind of project and I am sorry to say that I have spent more….not that I wanted to though. Nothing prettier than black, white and brass!

    1. Thank you! Ahhh! Can't wait to check it out. Haven't made the rounds yet, I'm a late riser πŸ˜‰ lol

    1. Sure! The link is in the post above, but I use Rustoleum's Metallic Gold Spray Paint πŸ™‚ It's the green can.

  5. I was wondering about that toilet paper dispenser you have!!! Looks great Reichel, now I'm thinking I should update mine since I have gold spray paint lying around the house too! Love the black as well!

    1. Thanks Vel! I definitely think the best transformation today was that TP holder! You should definitely give it a shot πŸ™‚

  6. It's amazing what a difference painting the hardware makes. It's super subtle but makes for the perfect statement. Good eye my dear!

    1. I know! Right? I have always loved the shape of those knobs, but the finish was killing me! lol

    1. Is it terrible to admit I didn't? lol. I fully admit I'm a lazy DIYer. Still they turned out fab in my opinion πŸ™‚

  7. Wow Reichel this is a great example of what a little paint and good imagination can do for a room. Love a black and white bathroom!! Great job,

  8. Wow, this looks great. I love the black and white color combination. The rug is great too. Can't wait to see the mirror.

    1. Thank you Beth! You know me! Always trying to get the biggest bang for my buck πŸ˜‰

  9. Love the black and white combo with a touch of gold. While a dark room does look great, it also has to be the right space. I think you made the right call in the bathroom. Looking forward to seeing the mirror next week.

  10. This is so so pretty! What a great combination. I have always been afraid to paint cabinets…this is inspiring! Question, though…is your new outlet GFI? It is certainly better looking than the old one, but the outlet must be close to water? As a realtor, I see GFI outlets (or lack of!) mentioned on just about every home inspection.
    Be safe!

  11. Love the black and gold! Gold spray paint is the best! I love the fact you sprayed all the details like the soap pump and toilet paper holder!!! Great looking! Stunning job! Lance @ Parker Kennedy

  12. I could NEVER have the bathroom I use all the time have black walls. Such a good call on white walls with black cabinets. It looks gorgeous! Plus the gold — LOVE!!

  13. I’ve been wanting to spray paint my cabinet hardware gold as well. what brand of spray paint did you use? it looks amazing!
