Even though I didn’t make any formal resolutions for the new year, I think my unofficial motto has been to “simplify”. That goes for my life AND home. It definitely goes along with my whole minimalist vibe. On that front, I’ve been on a huge declutter and organizing kick over here at the copycatchic household.
My first project for 2017? The kitchen sink area. No, it’s not glamorous, but under the sink was dark, cluttered and just a complete disaster. I collaborated with method to show you their newest spring limited edition collection and share my minimalist kitchen clean up tips. I thought it was the perfect partnership as their newest collection is based on simplicity, function, and minimalism. Right up my alley!
First things first, I removed everything from the area and konmari’d it. Just kidding! But yes, I pared everything down and kept only the products we actually use. Then I gave the sink and cabinet area a major scrub down from top to bottom. Next came a little bit of cabinet liner to give it a fresh new look. Then I determined what we actually needed in our space:
DISHWASHING & DRYING
I wanted to find a way to keep our sponges, scrubs and soap within reach, organized and sitting pretty. I bought this little tray to keep those scrubbers in line. Now they have a home, so we don’t lose them (down the garbage disposal *ahem*). We also needed a better way to dry our dishes, if you can believe it, we didn’t have a legit dish rack! I bought this amazing roll-up one and it has been perfect. It sits over the sink and doesn’t get the counters wet. AND you can just roll it up and tuck it away when not in use.
For hand soap, I chose method’s spring limited edition white rose hand soap because, hello, it’s dreamy. I also love how the white perfectly matches with our dish soap dispenser and who doesn’t love the smell of rose. The other method’s spring limited editions are just as inspiring: ocean waves, ginger tea and chamomile lavender (I’m definitely trying that one next!). So refreshing and a little more delicate than their usual scents.
CLEANING SUPPLIES
My kitchen cleaning supplies were an unorganized mess. AND I kept buying supplies that we already had, just because I couldn’t find them when I needed them. So I paired everything we used regularly down to fit in a handheld caddy: all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, stainless steel cleaner, wood polish, daily granite cleaner, floor cleaner. We have a few other cleaners (rug, oven and stain cleaner) that we don’t use very often, so I just tucked that way behind the cleaning caddy. I also added a separate little bin for our dishwasher pods.
TRASH & COMPOST
We like our garbage can to be hidden, not out on display, therefore we always keep it in a cabinet. The garbage can we did have was huge and took up a lot of valuable under sink cabinet space. Also we didn’t have a compost bin and that’s just not acceptable over here, especially since included in our city trash pick up. So these compact cabinet door mountable beauties came to the rescue, and we haven’t looked back!
DISH TOWELS & CLEANING CLOTHS
I wanted to find a way to store our cleaning cloths and dish towels under the sink. The place we were keeping them was not convenient and…just not good looking 😉 Once I got rid of all of the unused clutter under the sink, there was plenty of room for our dish towels, cleaning cloths, etc. I found clear bins that were the perfect size to fit under the garbage disposal. I also utilized wall space by adding these clips and hooks. The clip holds my trusty dish gloves and the hooks hold our dishwashing brushes and hand broom. So convenient!

What do you guys think of my new minimalist under-sink area? It’s been awhile now and I must say everything is working like clockwork. Pretty happy since I spent so much time figuring out measurements and placements! Makes it totally worth it. Do you guys have any other favorite kitchen clean up tips? It’s kind of a tricky one wouldn’t you agree?

Where did you get the striped towels
Reichel says
The company that made them actually went out of business. I’m so sad though, because their dishtowels were AMAZING. They’re made from bamboo and so soft and absorbent. If I find a comparable replacement I’ll let you know. These ones look similar but aren’t made from bamboo: http://bit.ly/2kOmY05 🙂

Hi Janet- It was this color when we moved in 🙁 Sorry that doesn’t help…but it reminds me of Benjamin Moore’s Indian River, which is a color I’ve used before and love!

Such a clever resolution for the cabinet area under the kitchen sink! i store my towels in one of the drawers of my kitchen cabinet but the general detergent solutions, I tend to store under the sink. occasionally, i organize them because those areas do get cluttered…out of sight…out of mind, so i try to remember to make them as neat as I can. thanks for the enjoyable write-up!
