Picking the right side table can really make (or break) a room. End tables are small compared to the rest of the furniture in the space, but they really make a huge impact. It’s so important to really think about what you need and why you need it. I keep the following three things in mind when choosing a side table.
Side tables should be the same approximate height as your chair or sofa arm. There are some exceptions to the rule: nesting tables or end tables with 2 different levels, but most of the time a table that’s taller than your sofa arm not only looks awkward but IS awkward for people to use.

Go for contrast when choosing a table, most of the time you don’t want your side table blending in with the rest of the furniture. It’s your chance to go bold and fun, since an end table is small and inexpensive to replace if need be. If you have soft pieces in the room go for something sleek. If you have modern streamlined furniture go with something natural like wood to contrast it. Color is important too, if you have a light colored sofa, you want to choose something dark so it catches the eye.
three | purpose
What is the reason for the table? Is it for storage? Or for people to place their drinks on? Or is it a place for the remote? Or is it decorative (to fill an empty space in the room)? Keep all of these questions in mind when considering which table to purchase. If it’s storage you’ll need do you want it open storage or something more hidden? Also if your table will there for people to put their drinks on, you’ll most likely want to go for a table with a glass, stone, acrylic or metal top so you won’t have to worry about coasters.
For example, in my living room I had this side table. I love the table, it was my Grandmother’s and I definitely think it fits in this room, but I felt like it was a bit too small and maybe a smidge too tall. Also I wanted something to warm up all of the black and white going on.
First option, this great gold bamboo table which I featured a couple of days ago. Love it. It’s a great piece, but obviously it doesn’t work here. It’s too tall and the gold doesn’t compliment the current tone.
Target has so many different sizes and styles of end tables, it seems like the possibilities are endless. Here are some of the other side tables I was considering.
