| Sputnik Chandelier |

>> Friday, February 27, 2009

Big thanks to Kelly Geisen and the comment by Lisa on my last post for my latest Chic Find! The inspiration are the gorgeous Metropolitan Opera House Sputnik Chandeliers. You can find a great example in Kelly's Living Room. I found a few more cost friendly options for us...

Debenhams Silver Sphere Ceiling Light on sale for only $177! They are in the UK though...so shipping might be an issue. This one's my personal fave, more bang (or arms) for your buck.

Z Gallerie's Orbit Chandelier only $239. This one has 24 arms, not too shabby!

And of course there's always EBay! This one is only $229.

Modern Artifax has 40 arm Sputnik Lamp for only $375.

InMod's 24 arm Sputnik Chandelier is $318.

So it looks like there are plenty of versions out there. Let me know if you guys find any other good contenders! Oh and here are a couple other noteworthy finds not pictured:

Home Depot's Supernova Chandelier: $347.99
Evo Furniture's Sputnik Chandelier: $349.99

Does everyone remember the Small Spaces Big Style post I did? Well it's time for update! Kelly Geisen actually contacted me and it turns out she has done a new, bigger and better apartment. It's in the same building as her last studio...just down the hall actually.

You can tell just how much effort was put into each and every detail and it all goes together so well. I love the glam of it all. Here are a few pictures from her website, www.kellyg-design.com as well as description of some of Kelly's favorite details (Visit her website to see more!)

The newer space as I had so much more to work with in terms of creating little rooms. I went a little more modern in this space with vintage 60's lighting. The LR chandelier is a sputnik Metropolitan Opera fixture- absolutely love it. The bones are still very traditional. There are 12 8 1/2 foot vintage doors in the apartment which give the space character, a ton of molding throughout and lots of old Venetian etched mirrors.

Some highlights: the kitchen is wonderful as all appliances are paneled and under the counter or behind mirrored doors on the upper cabinets. I wanted a butler's pantry look. It is great for entertaining and the long counter is rare in NYC. The very large arched mirrored door opens to an 8 1/2 inch pantry which seems small but 10 feet up - it holds a ton. The BR wallpaper design is made from thousands of tiny glass reflective beads. The mantles provide a focal point to the LR/BR and house my flat screens which are at eye level when seated.

| Chic Find | Pottery Barn Hudson Dresser

>> Wednesday, February 25, 2009

I love this dresser. Can't say I have the room for it, but if I did....I might get it...or I might go for Walmart's Canopy dresser instead ;)

Pottery Barn's Extra Wide Hudson Dresser has a rich Mahogany stain and eight dressers. At $1,599 it's pretty a substantial purchase.

Walmart's new Canopy product line is pretty tempting wouldn't you say? The Canopy Dresser also comes in Mahogany, but only has six drawers. I think that might be an easy sacrifice for only spending $349. Wouldn't you say?

Have any of you purchased anything from the Canopy line? Any feedback quality-wise?

| Chic Find | LEM Piston Stool

I've always admired the sleek modern lines of the LEM Piston bar stool. It's on sale now at DWR (Design Within Reach) for $680-$865. Ouch.

Leave it to Overstock to find a cheaper version...or two...or three. This one is my particular favorite as it's the closest to the original. AND it's only $169.99. Gotta love the Hollywood Wenge Barstool from Overstock.com.

| Chair Redo |

Before

After

Close up of monogram

I've finally had the time to have my childhood chair reupholstered. This chair has been with me through the good & bad...obviously it's had a few rough patches judging from the before pictures! I found a luscious grey wool to recover it in. The velvet that was there before was a kitty hair magnet. I also was able to bring it in to my local embroidery shop and have them add a custom monogram for just $20! It now fits in to our grey & black master bedroom. I couldn't be happier.

Usually getting a piece reupholstered can be a little pricey, but buying the frabric & trim myself helped keep the costs down. As well as putting an ad on my local Craigslist and finding a reasonably priced reupholsterer! The work was $100, fabric was $30 and the embroidery was $20. Grand total = $150, not too bad in my opinion! Especially when considering the condition of the chair when I brought it in!
